Lamm led Colorado at a time when the state was much more Republican than it is today and managed to win support from voters in both political parties. He also had to work across the aisle to get anything done; for most of his time in office, the GOP controlled both chambers of the Colorado legislature. He held elected office from 1964 to 1987, starting in the state legislature before going on to serve three terms as governor. John Dillinger studied and used the bank robbery techniques developed by Lamm. After he and an accomplice were arrested in February 1927, Lamm's past came up when police discovered previous criminal suspicion.

“Dick more than anything taught me how to think strategically, how to take an issue and turn it on its side,” recalled longtime aide and staffer Maria Garcia Berry. Lamm is perhaps best remembered nationally for leading the successful opposition to block the 1976 Winter Olympics from coming to Denver, making it the only place to reject the games after being selected as the host. Lamm felt the Olympics would leave behind hefty bills and environmental damage, while the state's businesses would get few benefits from the spectacle. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock also spoke out saying “I have always admired Dick Lamm. "I’m very saddened to hear about the passing of former Governor Dick Lamm and send my condolences to Dottie and his entire family," he wrote.

“I was just amazed a governor would call a little old private citizen like me, but he was just that kind of person,” he said. After defeating the Olympics proposal, Lamm won the election to become the state’s 38th governor. To connect with voters, Lamm and his wife, Dottie, spent much of their time on the campaign trail on foot — literally walking around the state. After leaving office, Lamm remained a singular — and often controversial — voice on the pressures facing the state. He became a public critic of the concepts of multiculturalism and cultural diversity and a strong proponent for limits on immigration.

The barber was one of thousands of Indiana citizens organized to help police fight a growing number of bank robberies in the state. The driver panicked and pulled a fast U-turn, causing the Buick sedan to blow a tire after jumping a curb. His songwriting talents made him the default leader of the group in the early years. Lamm-penned hits include, "Beginnings", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Saturday in the Park" and "25 or 6 to 4". His clear baritone voice was an asset, as were his stylized keyboarding skills.

By his death in 1930, the Lamm Technique had already been widely imitated by other bank robbers across the country. Infamous bank robber John Dillinger studied Lamm's meticulous bank-robbing system and used it extensively throughout his criminal career. Dietrich and Clark met Dillinger during their stint in the Indiana state prison following Lamm's death. The pair were permitted to join Dillinger's gang on the condition they taught him everything they knew about the Lamm Technique. The system involved carefully studying a target bank for many hours before the robbery, developing a detailed floor plan, noting the location of safes, taking meticulous notes and establishing escape routes.
