Lamm played in bands throughout high school, and studied music theory and composition at Roosevelt University. In remembering Lamm, many who worked with him over the years condemned his most controversial views, but also spoke of him as a mentor, and a good governor who left long-lasting positive impacts on Colorado. Before every heist, Lamm obtained a nondescript car with a high-powered engine, and often recruited drivers who had been involved in auto racing. Lamm pasted a chart on the dashboard for the driver, which included block-by-block markings of escape routes, alternative turns and speedometer readings. Before each run, Lamm and the getaway driver clocked each route to the second under various weather conditions.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis also released a statement mourning Lamm's death. Dottie Lamm released a statement on the morning of July 29 regarding the death of her husband. While serving as first lady of Colorado, Dottie pushed issues surrounding reproductive rights, equal pay for equal work, and child care. Lamm was also a prolific writer and novelist, publishing dozens of books in his lifetime. Before getting into politics, Lamm worked as a as an accountant, tax clerk and a law clerk and later attended law school at the University of California before moving to Denver in 1962.

While a representative, Lamm also drafted and succeeded in passing the nation's first liberalized abortion law. His wife revealed the former governor of Colorado's passing with a statement.
“Dick more than anything taught me how to think strategically, how to take an issue and turn it on its side,” recalled longtime aide and staffer Maria Garcia Berry. Lamm is perhaps best remembered nationally for leading the successful opposition to block the 1976 Winter Olympics from coming to Denver, making it the only place to reject the games after being selected as the host. Lamm felt the Olympics would leave behind hefty bills and environmental damage, while the state's businesses would get few benefits from the spectacle. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock also spoke out saying “I have always admired Dick Lamm. "I’m very saddened to hear about the passing of former Governor Dick Lamm and send my condolences to Dottie and his entire family," he wrote.
